Dr. Peabody in Furcy, le procès de la liberté [Furcy: The Freedom Suit]

Sue Peabody participated in the plenary opening session of the Society for French Historical Studies in Charlotte, North Carolina, with the screening of the French documentary,Furcy, le procès de la liberté [Furcy: The Freedom Suit], based upon her award-winning book, Madeleine’s Children: Family, Freedom, Secrets and Lies in France’s Indian Ocean Colonies (Oxford UP, 2017). Together with the director, Pierre Lane, they discussed the making of the film, just released with English subtitles, in which she appears as a “talking head.”

In addition, Oxford University Press has released Madeleine’s Children: Family, Freedom, Secrets and Lies in France’s Indian Ocean Colonies in paperback for the first time.

Andra Chastain to Present with Global Urban History Project

Dr. Chastain will be presenting on the Cities and Inequalities Dream Conversation Lighting Round virtual panel on Friday, January 27th. The event is free and open to the public. There will be four presenters discussing their research on urban history and inequality with case studies from Chile, Mexico, China, and the Soviet Union.

Dr. Chastain gives invited lecture

Andra Chastain gave an invited lecture for the Alworth Center for the Study of Peace and Justice at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota. The public humanities talk, a joint lecture with Timothy Lorek, was titled 21st Century Dispatches from Latin America.

Award Created in Honor of Dr. Sue Peabody

Exciting News – the French Colonial Historical Society/Société d’histoire coloniale française has created a new award in honor of WSU-Vancouver History Department faculty member Sue Peabody, for her influence on and significance to the field of French Colonial History. The Award is to support the travel of a scholar from the Global South to the society’s annual meeting (which meets at many sites associated with French colonial history, from Montreal,Québec, and New Orleans, to Dakar and Siem Reap, but also places like Seattle or San Francisco).
