Daniel Fogt receives grant from Dutch institution

We are happy to announce that Daniel Fogt, PhD candidate in our department, has received a grant from the Catharina Halkes Foundation, a Dutch institution that provides support for scholarship relating to gender and religion. Fogt will use the grant to support to travel to the Netherlands in Summer 2019 to complete research for his dissertation, “The Reformation Across Borders: The Struggle for Purity and Acts of Nonconformity in Netherlandish Refugee Communities, 1565-1600.” Catharine Halkes (1920-2011) was a leading feminist theologian in the Netherlands and professor of feminism at the Radboud University in Nijmegen.

Jesse Spohnholz’s new book wins German history prize

Jesse Spohnholz’s book, The Convent of Wesel: The Event that Never was and the Invention of Tradition (Cambridge University Press, 2017) won the 2018 prize for the best book in German History or Social Sciences published in the previous two years, awarded by the German Studies Association and the DAAD.

Dr. Sutton speaks at the Clements Center

On Thursday, September 13, 2018, the Clements Center will welcome Matthew Sutton, the Edward R. Meyer Distinguished Professor of History at Washington State University, for his talk “Spies and unHoly Lies: How American Missionaries-Turned-Covert-Agents Helped Win World War II and Shape the Future of U.S. Intelligence.” The Intelligence Studies Project (ISP) will co-host this event.

Ryan Booth awarded Western History Association prize

Ryan Booth (Boag) has received the 2018 Western History Association Graduate Student Prize. This prize is designed to foster community and connection at the WHA, as well as to enhance collegial citizenship within the organization.

Brian Stack in the Journal of the History of Sexuality

Brian Stack’s (Boag) article “From Sodomists to Citizens: Same-Sex Sexuality and the Progressive-era Washington State Reformatory,” was accepted for publication by the Journal of the History of Sexuality. The article is based on his MA thesis.
