Sue Peabody gave an invited paper, “`Indians are a Free People’: French Regulation of Indian Slavery in Réunion, 1817–1844,” at the conference Race and Rights on the Indian Ocean World at the University of Virginia, March 29, 2024. While there, she guest-taught a graduate seminar, Topics in Modern European History: The Intimacies of French Empire. And, she did a planning walkthrough of her exhibit, “The Surprising Story of Furcy Madeleine,” which will open in the Shannon Library there in September.
