Heather McNamee presented a paper at the Association for the Study of African American Life and History Conference in Pittsburgh, PA. Her paper “Rhythms of Resistance: Black Music and Student Protest in Jonesboro, Arkansas” examined the role of music like James Brown’s “I’m Black and I’m Proud” in fostering racial consciousness, identity, and activism among teenagers in desegregated public schools.
