{"id":191,"date":"2016-04-20T14:13:38","date_gmt":"2016-04-20T21:13:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/history.wsu.edu\/history-newsletter\/?page_id=191"},"modified":"2016-05-23T15:39:10","modified_gmt":"2016-05-23T22:39:10","slug":"matt-sutton-wins-guggenheim","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/history.wsu.edu\/history-newsletter\/may-2016-homepage\/faculty-spotlight-2\/matt-sutton-wins-guggenheim\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Matt Sutton wins Guggenheim"},"content":{"rendered":"<section id=\"builder-section-1464043120170\" class=\"row single h1-header gutter pad-top\">\n<div style=\"\" class=\"column one \">\n<h1>Faculty spotlight<\/h1>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"builder-section-1461186766969\" class=\"row single gutter pad-top\">\n<div style=\"\" class=\"column one \">\n<header>\n<h2>Dr. Matt Sutton wins prestigious Guggenheim<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-177 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3205\/2016\/03\/Catholic-Church-Italy-396x502.jpg\" alt=\"Catholic Church Italy\" width=\"396\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3205\/2016\/03\/Catholic-Church-Italy-396x502.jpg 396w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3205\/2016\/03\/Catholic-Church-Italy-768x973.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3205\/2016\/03\/Catholic-Church-Italy-792x1004.jpg 792w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3205\/2016\/03\/Catholic-Church-Italy-990x1255.jpg 990w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3205\/2016\/03\/Catholic-Church-Italy.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/>Sutton, whose work explores the relationships among American religion, culture, and politics, was just named a <strong>2016 Guggenheim Fellow<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Characterized as \u201cmidcareer\u201d awards, Guggenheim Fellowships are \u201cintended for men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts.\u201d These are among the most competitive and prestigious fellowships that a scholar in the humanities can receive.<\/p>\n<p>Sutton is using the fellowship to support work on his current project, a book tentatively titled <em>FDR\u2019s Army of Faith: Religion and Espionage in World War II<\/em>, which will be published by Basic Books.<\/p>\n<p>The book will explore the roles that missionaries and religious activists played in espionage and covert operations during the war.<\/p>\n<p>Sutton\u2019s most recent book, <em>American Apocalypse: A History of Modern Evangelicalism<\/em> (Harvard University Press) continues to get excellent reviews. <em>The New Yorker<\/em> opined, \u201cThe history Sutton assembles is rich, and the connections are startling\u201d while the<em> London Sunday Times<\/em> called the book a \u201cvaluable, timely and often entertaining account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the usual academic journals, Sutton also earned excellent reviews in the United States in the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, Bookforum, and Raritan; in the U.K. in the <em>Times Literary Supplement<\/em> and <em>Guardian;<\/em> in Ireland in the <em>Irish Times;<\/em> as well as in magazines in Finland and Sweden, among many others.<\/p>\n<p>As the current presidential season unfolds, it\u2019s clear that Sutton\u2019s work is continuing to be both academically rigorous and relevant.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Sutton recently\u00a0 published an article in <em>The Seattle Times <\/em>titled &#8220;Why Hillary Clinton needs Jesus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To see\u00a0the entire article, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/opinion\/why-hillary-clinton-needs-jesus\/\" target=\"_blank\">click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Faculty spotlight Dr. Matt Sutton wins prestigious Guggenheim &nbsp; Sutton, whose work explores the relationships among American religion, culture, and politics, was just named a 2016 Guggenheim Fellow.
